Stats that: Differing number of matches played by big and small fish

  • Longford 2-11 Roscommon 1-8 Longford savoured a rare Croke Park triumph with a compelling second half performance which netted them the NFL Division Four title.
With the greatest respect to New York, Roscommon, Donegal and Antrim, the Championship finally kicks into gear this weekend with six matches scheduled for Sunday. Looking at the results over the last five seasons of the 12 counties competing on Sunday throws up some interesting statistics. Of course these tables don’t allow for one good year skewering the stats, they don’t allow for league form or a handy couple of minors coming through. But they do give a decent snapshot of a county's form over the last few years.

Perhaps the most interesting (and worrying) fact thrown up here is the difference in the number of matches played between different counties. All-Ireland champions Cork have played 32 Championship matches over the last five years. On Sunday they take on a Clare side who have played only 10 matches within that timeframe.

Kerry defend their provincial crown with 34 matches played since 2006 against a Tipperary side that have played 11 times in the same period. Of course in a knockout competition this is bound to happen but if success comes from experience then many counties are arguably caught in a Catch-22 situation at the moment.
