Johnston eligibility for Kildare still unclear

Seanie Johnston's ability to play for Kildare, following his transfer from Cavan Gaels to the St. Kevin's club in his adopted county, is still yet unclear.

Central Competitions Control Committee secretary Patrick Doherty has confirmed to the Leinster Leader that Johnston's transfer was decided under an older rule, due to its submission before the GAA's Annual Congress in Killenard last April.

It is as yet unclear if the Cavan native is eligible to play for Kildare. This is due to the London County Board bringing forward their Club Championship in order to ensure players were eligible to play in their Connacht Championship opener, after a ruling from the GAA's Central Council.

This has come about despite the fact that the Exiles' transfer requests were also submitted ahead of Congress.

According to the newspaper, Kildare GAA officials have been instructed to write to the Central Council seeking a ruling on the matter.

The Croke Park level committee are due to meet this Saturday when it is likely that the matter will be up for discussion.

Johnston made his debut for St. Kevin's last Sunday night in their Kildare SFL Division 2 meeting with Kilcock.

The former Cavan star scored five points in the game, which his new club won on a 1-11 to 0-8 scoreline.
