Alonso: Run of wins will be needed

Fernando Alonso feels consistency will not be enough to win this year's Formula One world title.

Alonso goes into tomorrow's Canadian Grand Prix in possession of the championship lead, notably as he is one of only two drivers to finish in the points in all six races so far this campaign.

Given the fact no driver has won two races it means the fight to claim the crown is wide open at this stage, with just 31 points covering the top seven.

Alonso, however, is convinced a "more normal" pattern of results will soon emerge when more will be required than merely finishing in the points.

Ferrari star Alonso said: "With different race winners you need to be consistent if you want to lead the championship.

"Here in Canada we could have a seventh winner because sooner or later Lewis (Hamilton) will win a race.

"Michael (Schumacher) could also do well especially, and then we have (Kimi) Raikkonen and (Romain) Grosjean.

"So there will be a different winner again, either here in Canada or soon.

"But maybe in July when there are three races in four weeks and a guy wins two of those, a team makes a step forward, you will need something more than consistency. It will not be enough."

One area of consistency Alonso is hoping to avoid this weekend is his run of form at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where he has retired five times in nine races.

There was one victory in his second title-winning year of 2006 during his days with Renault, but that is now a distant memory.

Despite that, Alonso said: "I do enjoy driving here.

"It is a special circuit, not comparable to any others as there are a lot of long straights with heavy braking into sharp corners.

"At the same time you have quite low grip and the walls are very close, so there is no room for a mistake.

"It is a challenging track, and historically there have been some ups and downs for me, so I really want to do well this year.

"With five retirements in nine races that is not a normal average for me, so hopefully we can change things this weekend."
